Dog Star Rescue
Dog Star Rescue

The Mission of Dog Star Rescue is to guide stray, abandoned, shelter, and owner-surrender dogs of all breeds and ages to qualified, caring, lifelong homes.

Many of the dogs that are rescued are brought to Connecticut from southern states where many dogs are suffering without food and shelter. Most dogs are placed in foster homes until they are emotionally healed and are ready for adoption.

SCF connected with DogStar during significant transitions to the organization. The Founders, Dan McCabe and his wife, after 10 years decided to create their dream life traveling the country in an RV (with their dog), and they chose three dedicated, very capable people to take over the operation. In addition, with SCF help, they also decided to move from rented facilities to buying their own building which is in process.

Why They Were Funded

Why we chose DogStar: Peter Stich and his wife Gail were life-long dog owners and found great comfort and companionship with their dogs. Ironically, while the Stiches were unaware of DogStar, the Stiches lived in the same town where DogStar operates, Bloomfield, CT. DogStar is very well run without one staffer or volunteer being paid. It has rescued thousands of dogs and placed them in good loving homes. The operations and administration of DogStar is impressive and very well organized. Every weekend, dogs are on display for adoption and sometimes hundreds of potential adoptees come seeking new four-legged friends.

The Potential: The new facilities are going to bring greater productivity and capability to the dog adoptions, and better comfort to those dogs that temporarily stay in their kennels. At some point, DogStar can be the operating standard for any dog rescue operation throughout the country.

Grants Made: 2024 SCF provided a capital campaign matching grant that was dedicated to building and outfitting the new building that they purchased.
